Embed With Games - Cara Ellison
Like many of the best critics and thinkers to engage with conceptions of videogames outside of the commercial mainstream media channels, Cara Ellison retired from games writing after a few years of frenzied work (to work on writing for games!) But before moving on to other projects, she left a massive archive of incisive articles at site like VICE, Kotaku, Guardian, and Rock Paper Shotgun. The most lasting of her contributions might well be the book Embed with Games: A Year on the Couch with Game Developers. This DIY gonzo-style journalism project, funded by her supporters via Kickstarter, let her travel and live side by side with game developers around the world. Leveraging a unique combination of overly intimate proximity, independence (in the punk tradition), and feminist perspective, Embedded with Games weaves together a the motivations, goals, and dreams of the developers, but also large-scale observations about entertainment media and digital culture, to create a snapshot of the burgeoning games development community from the heyday of the mid 2010’s.
