2064 Read Only Memories
2064: Read Only Memories is a cyber-noir visual novel set in a near-future technocratic San Francisco. The game has a supremely confident, colorful, queered pop-art swagger that lets it take a surprisingly direct and deep look at the evolving ways wee are redefining what it is to be human in the 21st century. Empathy and complexity of identity are core thematic elements that ROM examines through the many lenses of LGBTQA+ identities, genetic engineering, feminism, privatization, fandom, corporate culture, and artificial intelligence. The game is both visually and narratively scintillating with its mash-up of cultural references from innumerable cultural spaces and might seem alienating at first. But rather than simply rewarding insider knowledge, this heterogeneous deluge of references is leveraged to encourage the audience to come to terms with the limits of their own subject position (but also responsibility!) in the connected, multilayered, multivocal, ongoing, richness happening all around them.
