Art Club Challenge
Art Club Challenge is a mobile game where you play as an art student trying to grow as an artist through a series of mini-games. These little vignettes are miniature abstractions of the kinds of assignments presented to art students during their technical training. But they are completed using only rudimentary geometric shapes and a primary-limited palette—an 8-bit Mondrian vibe as painted by a Minecraft character, as it were. Despite its playful appearance, Art Club Challenge sets itself an ambitious goal: to demystify the experience of making art. (It’s important to remember that Mondrian’s paintings, too, have a bit of playful brushy-ness when seen in-person.) The game is something of a mildly incrementalist approach, but its warm and unpretentious vision of art is certainly a welcome counterbalance to the plutocracy’s and tech world’s insistence that modern and contemporary art is a scam, such as Bill Gate’s infamous diatribe against donating money to art museums. In a world filled with cynicism, irony, and academic gate-keeping, Art Club Challenge stands out for its untrammeled optimism that everyone can benefit from even a small exposure to making art.
